Next Week, February 20th, we are doing park clean up.
Thank you, Rotarians, for finding our room this past week at the Santa Maria Inn. We were moved to the Santa Maria Room, but will be back in the Kent Room for our next meeting on February 27th with our District Governor, Marta Golding Brown!
This week's speaker was Mark Steller and we got to hear about two different topics. The first was about his position and responsibilities on the Orcutt Union District School Board and the second was about his ownership of businesses in Old Town Orcutt. Both positions have had their challenges. As Orcutt has grown the schools have had to expand and Righetti High School has had to build considerable space for its students. He's had to deal with issues on students, parents, staffing, and expansion in the District. As owner of a retail business in Orcutt, he's had to move the business once and change his operations.
Here is a list of our upcoming meetings and speakers:
February 20th: Park Cleanup
February 27th: District Governor Marta Golding Brown and Board of Directors meeting

Maricopa Update
Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the sidewalk outside the local coffee shop to discuss tourism in Maricopa. Januvius began, "I appreciate the fact that Maricopa is the "Playground of the Stars," and that all the beautiful people from Hollywood just love to visit our fair town and spend their money, but sometimes they are a little too much." Homer chimed in, "I hear you, but I guess it is a small price to pay for being the "Playground of the Stars." Just then one of the Hollywood persons came up to the door of the coffee shop and tried to open it. After several unsuccessful tries she finally noticed the handwritten note on the door, "Back in 10 Minutes." She looked at our two local champions, "When is the barista coming back?" Januvius replied, "What does the sign say?" She said, "Back in 10 Minutes." Homer answered, "Well, I guess he will be back in 10 minutes." "But I need my "Venti Iced Skinny Hazelnut Macchiato, Sugar-Free Syrup, Extra Shot, Light Ice, No Whip." Do you happen to know if he just left like a minute ago, or if he left nine minutes ago?" Januvius piped up, "Yes I do." She asked, "Well, when did he leave?" Januvius chuckled as he answered, "He left right after he posted the sign on the door." She was getting a little impatient with our two heroes, "You guys are just messing with me. I don't think I can wait any longer. Is there another coffee shop where I could get my "Venti Iced Skinny Hazelnut Macchiato, Sugar-Free Syrup, Extra Shot, Light Ice, No Whip?" Homer replied, "Yes there is." She asked, "Where might it be?" Homer said with a straight face, "About 10 minutes away." Just then the barista returned and she was able to get her fancy coffee. Homer said to Januvius, "I don't think we were following the Four Way Test, and I don't think the Chamber of Commerce is going to be giving us any awards for that performance." Januvius replied, "I won't tell anyone if you don't." Homer chirped, "It's a deal."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech
We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.
We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.
We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.
In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000 which we gave to five local charities:
Orcutt Trails
CASA
Casa of Hope
ECHO/Band of Brothers
YMCA
We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.
We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.
Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.
THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
THE OBJECT OF ROTARY
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;
Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
