Rotary Club of Santa Maria
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

WE ARE DARK ON JANUARY 30TH!!

It was good to hear from Kristine Jacobs, the Utility Outreach Specialist for the City of Santa Maria this week.  The sheer enormity of the amount of refuse collected and the amount that is recycled shows how big and important this area is to our community.  I brought home many of the resources she provided and learned that there are several products we have been putting into the trash that should instead be going into the recycle bin.  I hope you took one of the magnets home to post in your kitchen to help you remember all the products that can be recycled and not put into our landfill site, which has a limited life and then would need to be replaced with yet another site!

We will be back at the Santa Maria Inn on February 6th to hear from Sandra Dickerson with the Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra.  On the 13th we will hear from Mark Steller, Board member of the Orcutt Union School District and local business owner.

We are doing park cleanup on February  20th and District Governor Marta Golding Brown will be our speaker on February 27th.  On  March 5th we will hear from Joanna Dominguez with People's Self Help Housing and finding out more about the impact they are having in our community!

WE ARE DARK ON JANUARY 30TH!!

RYLA
(Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)
Each year, thousands of young people take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program worldwide. Young people are chosen for their leadership potential to attend an all-expenses-paid camp to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event’s curriculum.  If you know of a high school underclassman (no seniors allowed) who would want to participate in this program, please give the name to President James, who is our RYLA Coordinator.  The applications are due in January.  The RYLA camp is April 11-14.

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss truck repair.  Homer asked, "What have you been up to this week, my friend?"  Januvius answered, "I have been having some problems with my truck for several weeks now.  It has been running rough, sometimes stalling out, and the gas mileage has really gone down.  I took it to the dealer, and they couldn't find anything wrong with it.  So I took it to no less than three independent garages to see if they could find the problem.  I had no luck.  Finally, I was at my wit's end.  I saw an ad on line for a "Holistic Mechanic," who advertised an oil change and a tune-up for $50, so I said, "What have I got to lose?"  Homer inquired, "What on earth is a "Holistic Mechanic?"  "It was a unique experience for sure," began Januvius, "You know how in most garages there are dirty shop towels scattered all over the place.  Well, there were no dirty shop towels anywhere.  And in most garages the mechanic is wearing grimy coveralls with a patch on the chest that says, "Ace, Chick, Mac, or Bud."  This guy was wearing very clean coveralls with the name "Zephyr" on the chest.  I commented to him that his coveralls were very clean.  He said that he was going to take them home that evening and wash them because he got some "bad vibes" on them in the morning."  "This was not your usual repair shop," commented Homer.  "Januvius continued, "The place was spotless and he had two diffusers in the garage diffusing lavender essential oil.  It smelled great."  Homer asked, "What did he do to fix your truck?"  Januvius responded, "He first asked me when I last had the air changed in my tires.  I told him I hadn't ever changed the air in the tires.  He said that I should change the air every year or two.  He drained the air out of all the tires, then brought out a canister of "Antarctic Air."  According to his sources it is the cleanest air on the planet.  He filled all the tires with the "Antarctic Air."  He started the truck and listened to the motor for about 30 seconds.  He turned it off then walked around the truck.  He put his hands on the hood and rubbed it for a minute."  Homer interrupted, "Did he open the hood and look at the engine?"  "Not yet," said Januvius, "He took out a bag labeled "Industrial Strength Sugar Free, Fat Free, Gluten Free, Non-GMO, Free Range Kale Chips" and poured them into the gas tank.  Then he took a bag labeled "Genuine Sedona Crystals" and put six of them in the glove box.  After that he did open the hood and drain the oil from the crankcase, which he replaced with Extra Virgin Italian Olive Oil.  Finally, he put his yoga mat in the bed of the truck and did yoga positions for 30 minutes in the bed while some etherial new age music was playing in the garage."  Homer was befuddled, "This was a very strange experience.  I guess you might as well have thrown that $50 in the toilet."  Januvius quickly quipped, "Are you kidding?  The truck runs better than when I first bought it.  But I should tell you that the bill was not $50."  Homer smiled, "So he took you to the cleaners?"  "No," began Januvius, "The bill was $52.73.  He apologized as he explained that the extra $2.73 was because he had to use the "Industrial Strength" Kale Chips.

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?

2.  Is it fair to all concerned?

3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
