President's Message

Fellow Rotarians,

The message this week is just a reminder that we’re dark for Thanksgiving:

Thank you to Nancy Crawford for hosting last week’s meeting! Please note that we are NOT meeting this week in recognition of Thanksgiving. I hope you all have a great time with family as we think on the many things we have to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving!

Maricopa Update

Last week at the end of a very long day Homer Higgenbottom and an exhausted Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss Thanksgiving and turkeys.  Homer asked, "You look worn out.  What have you been doing?"  "It's a long story, Homer," began Januvius.  "Last week I read a story in the newspaper that there was a shortage of turkeys this year.  I decided I was going to hunt down a wild turkey and we would have that for our Thanksgiving dinner."  Homer interrupted, "But Januvius, you don't even own a gun."  Januvius answered, "I know.  That's why I told my wife that I was going to go out and buy a BB gun.  She immediately said, 'You can shoot your eye out, you know!'  I finally convinced her to let me buy a BB gun and I went over to Stinky Paddybottom's Cryptocurrency Exchange and BB Gun Emporium and purchased my weapon.  This morning I got up bright and early and hiked into the boonies looking for a turkey."  "Did you see any?" asked Homer.  "Not a one," answered Januvius, "As a matter of fact I had three sightings of Bigfoot, but no sightings of turkeys.  I guess there is a shortage of turkeys even in the wilderness. I must have walked 20 miles out there and I am so tired.  The adventure wasn't a total loss.  I did shoot a bunch of ground squirrels.  I guess I'm a pretty good shot."  Homer asked, "What are you going to do about Thanksgiving?" "That's what I wanted to talk to you about.  I'm afraid that if I tell my wife I didn't shoot a turkey she will make me take the BB gun back, so I was thinking of lashing all the ground squirrels together and telling my wife that it was a turkey," replied Januvius.  "I think your wife would figure that out in a matter of seconds," said Homer, "But this morning I did see a few turkeys left at the grocery store.  Why don't you just go see if there are any left?"  "And if I did manage to buy one and bring it home I would be admitting defeat and my wife would make me take the BB gun back," stated Januvius.  Homer added wisdom to the predicament, "I think this where the Four Way Test comes into play.  You've got be honest and do what is beneficial for everyone involved.  I'll bet your wife doesn't make you take the BB gun back even though 'You can shoot your eye out, you know."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?
2.  Is it fair to all concerned?
3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
