Rotary Club of Santa Maria
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

It was great to hear from our District Governor, Marta Golding Brown this past week.  Rotary is making a difference in so many ways in our community.  This week our club donated $1,000 to support the fight against human trafficking in our county.  So many of our Rotarians are involved with helping others
in our city and county!

Because of our recent speaker at Rotary, Sandra Dickerson, my wife and myself enjoyed a wonderful concert by Santa Maria's own Philharmonic Symphony!!  What a joy!

Marga Cooley presented a Spring Fundraiser that we will decide as a Club to go forward with!

Tom Martinez was busy distributing funds from the Super Bowl and the rest of the proceeds going to our Club!  Thank you Tom!

This next Tuesday we will hear from Joanna Dominguez with People's Self Help Housing.  They are doing a great work and I am looking forward to their impact in our City and with the families they
have helped to find housing!!

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to again discuss the current state of dating.  Januvius began, "Last week we talked about your nephew and his problems with dating.  Well, today I want to talk about my niece.  She is a very nice girl and has a good career.  She's an excellent nurse.  Unfortunately she seems to get along better with her dog than she does men."  Homer intervened, "I can see where that would be a problem."  Januvius continues, "A couple weeks ago she took her dog to the dog park.  She was having  a great time playing fetch with her dog.  Another dog came over and started playing with her dog.  Things were going OK.  The dogs were not growling or barking at each other.  The other dog's owner came over and introduced himself to her.  Not only did the dogs get along, the dog owners got along.  They talked for about half an hour while the dogs played with each other.  Then she had to go home."  Homer opined, "That sounds like a good start."  Januvius said, "I agree.  A couple days later she again took her dog to the dog park and the other dog owner was there with his dog.  This time they talked for almost an hour while the dogs played and everything seemed to be going good."  "This sounds promising," offered Homer.  Januvius continued, "A few days later she took her dog to the park and this guy and his dog were there again.  After talking for a few minutes he said, "I have a cabin up in the Sierras.  I'm going up there this weekend.  I was wondering. .."  Immediately her brain jumped to warp speed as she asked herself, "I hardly know this guy, how could I go spend a weekend with him?  We have never even had a coffee together, why would I want to spend several days with him?  "What if he's related to Charles Manson?"  He finished his sentence, "I was wondering if I could take your dog to the cabin with my dog?"  Homer concluded, "I guess sometimes we need to be patient and let people finish their thoughts before we jump to conclusions."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?

2.  Is it fair to all concerned?

3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
