Rotary Club of Santa Maria
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

SPECIAL MEETING THIS WEEK WITH District Governor MARTA GOLDING BROWN!
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING TO FOLLOW!
Please make every effort to attend!

I was able to attend the Red Cross event Saturday morning, where we distributed and installed smoke detectors for residents of the Casa Grande Mobile Home Park.  Residents were very appreciative
of our efforts!  Every home had a detector installed in every bedroom and in the living room as well!  We started at 9am and were completely done with the entire subdivision by 2pm!!  This was a Red Cross sponsored event.

This past week was the third Tuesday of the month, so we had our bi-monthly park cleanup event.  I want to give a special thank you to all who gave of their time and helped.  Since we were rained out in December it had been 4 months since we last picked up the park and there was plenty of trash to pick up!!

Here's a special shout out of thanks to:

Alain Pincot
John and Sharon Henning
Susan and Robert Rees
Ken Dally
Dr. Lynda Gantt joined us for a nice lunch in the Tap Room following our trash pick up!
If I missed anyone....I am so sorry!

This week our program will be led by District Governor Marta Golding Brown and will be followed by a Board Of Directors meeting... so come prepared for a great program!

Trash Cleanup of Buena Vista Park

Many thanks to President James, Ken Dally, Susan and Robert Rees, Alain Pincot, and John and Sharon Henning for picking up trash last week at Buena Vista Park.  These Rotarians and spouses braved pelting rain, gale-force winds, snow, sleet, and softball size hail to pick up trash at Buena Vista Park.  Well, maybe the rain wasn't pelting, but there were sprinkles. And the winds were not gale-force.  Perhaps they was a slight breeze.  To be fair there was no snow or sleet.  And the hail was not exactly softball size, . . . maybe baseball size.  . . . No, maybe it was golf ball size.  To be honest we didn't have any hail.  But they did pick up trash for about thirty minutes and it was a tremendous sacrifice.

"Travel is a good corrective for mental nearsightedness - if the traveler will cast aside his prejudices.  People will see what they look for, the ugly or the beautiful.  If they seek things to condemn, they will find them in plenty and return home more prejudiced and arrogant than ever."

We would like to extend an invitation to The Rotary Club of Santa Maria to join us for a couple of classes coming up.  Both will take place in Santa Maria.  I attached the fliers that explain each class.  Let us know if you or anyone else would like to attend.  Thank you.

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss the current state of dating.  Homer began, "I think I need to have a chat with my nephew about dating.  He goes on lots of first dates, but he never goes on a second date."  Januvius concluded, "He must be doing something wrong if he never gets a second date."  Homer said, "He told me about his last date, and I think I have figured out what is happening."  "Do tell," replied Januvius.  Homer said, "He said he went on a blind date.  He met the woman at a bar and they had a couple drinks.  They really seemed to hit it off.  So he asked if she would go to dinner with him.  She was very agreeable to that.  They went to a nice restaurant and everything was still going very well.  Afterwards he drove her to her apartment and asked her for a good night kiss.  That also went well.  He then asked if he could come in and she said that she had to get up early in the morning and really needed to get some sleep.  He thanked her for a very good evening and went home.  Now here is where I think he messed up.  When he went home he emailed her a bill for her share of the drinks and the meal."  Januvius spoke up, "Homer, I'm not an expert on dating, but I do believe that you are right.  And I'll bet they never even discussed the Four Way Test."  Homer added, "I do believe that you are not as dumb as I look.  I'm going to call him tonight and explain the Four Way Test to him."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?

2.  Is it fair to all concerned?

3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
