Rotary Club of Santa Maria
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year.  I did not make any New Year's resolutions but I am trying to be more conscious of my health and my diet and exercise.  By not making any resolutions, I haven't broken any!!

This week we are back in the Kent Room on Tuesday and I look forward to seeing you all.  If you traveled, I am sure the club would like to hear of your journey's!  Most of my family made it home (all but
Thomas and his crew from Albuquerque) as they had a baby girl just after Christmas!

We have an opportunity to join with another club to offer a prize for  a High  School design  Competition.  Cost would be $600 for our share.

Mark your calendars to attend the  Human Trafficking conference sponsored by the night Rotary Club.  It will be held at the SM Country Club on Friday January 19th from 10:30am to 1:30 pm. Cost is $25/person and includes lunch.  A project that definitely deserves our attention and support.

If you have any programs or speakers in mind please let me know!

Service before Self,

James Stoddard

RYLA
(Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)
Each year, thousands of young people take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program worldwide. Young people are chosen for their leadership potential to attend an all-expenses-paid camp to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event’s curriculum.  If you know of a high school underclassman (no seniors allowed) who would want to participate in this program, please give the name to President James, who is our RYLA Coordinator.  The applications are due in January.  The RYLA camp is April 11-14.

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss New Year's Resolutions.  Homer asked, "Did you make any New Year's Resolutions this year?"  Januvius was quick to answer, "Why of course.  I always make New Year's Resolutions."  Homer inquired, "So are you going to tell me?"  "Sure," said Januvius.  "I decided that I am going to stop procrastinating."  Homer offered, "That sounds like a worthwhile goal.  Have you started yet?"  Januvius answered, "No, not really.  I'm having trouble deciding when I should try to stop procrastinating.  I was going to start this week, but then I put it off.  Maybe next week.  Maybe the week after.  I guess I just don't know when I should stop procrastinating."  Homer inquired, "Did you make any other resolutions?"  Januvius replied, "Yes I did.  I decided that I am going to become gluten free."  "That sounds like you are concerned about your health.  Are you having any digestive problems?"  "No, not really," said Januvius.  "I just thought it might help my general health.  But I am being smart about it.  You know how a lot of people make resolutions and make drastic changes in their life style on January 1st.  Then they find out that it is a lot harder than they originally thought, so by about January 6th they give up and go back to their old life style.  Well, I'm not doing that.  I am gradually moving into the gluten free life style."  Homer responded, "That sounds like the smartest thing you have said in a long time.  How are you moving into being gluten free?"  Januvius answered, "I am not eating any gluten between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM."  Homer couldn't help but remark, "You don't normally eat anything between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM.  How is this helping you to become gluten free?"  "It is keeping my attitude positive since I am not failing," said Januvius. "Maybe if I am still successful at this routine I will increase my hours to between 7:00 PM and 8:00 AM."  Homer mused, "I think this is a clear violation of the Four Way Test in that you are lying to yourself about becoming gluten free."  "Maybe, but at least I still have a positive attitude," concluded Januvius.

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?
2.  Is it fair to all concerned?
3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
