Maricopa Update

Last week the Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss Rotary membership and the criminal justice system.  Homer started the conversation, "Yesterday I got a phone call from my nephew, Jeremiah Jellybottom."  "How's he doing?  Wasn't he tossed in the slammer for drug running a while back?" asked Januvius.  Homer piped up, "Please, it's pharmacological logistics coordination specialist, not drug runner.  Yes, he was in jail for a few years for drug running, I mean pharmacological logistics coordination for one of the Mexican cartels, but he's out on parole now.  He's doing community service and trying to show the judge that he has cleaned up his act."  Januvius inquired, "I think it would be great if he cleaned up his act, but do you really think that he wants to clean up his act?"  Homer answered, "I said he want the judge to think that he has cleaned up his act.  Personally I don't think that he really wants to go straight. He likes working for the cartel, and he has too good a life working for them."  Januvius asked, "So why did he call you?"  "Well," started Homer, "He said that as part of his community service he wants to join Rotary."  Januvius responded, "But how can he join Rotary if he is still running drugs for the cartel?"  Homer answered, "His classification would be pharmacological logistics coordination specialist."  Januvius said, "Homer, I don't think this passes the Four Way Test."  Homer asked, "What should I tell him?"  Januvius replied, "Tell him to join the Kiwanis."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?
2.  Is it fair to all concerned?
3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
