Rotary Club of Santa Maria
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

THIS WEEK WE MEET AT THE Santa Maria Inn! PROGRAM IS THE DIGNITY BEHAVIORAL GROUP.  WINE AND DESSERT FUND RAISER IS MAY 5TH!

We had a great off site meeting this past week.  We met at Central Coast Trucking and learned about how vital to every industry trucking truly is.  Moving imported products, products from cross docks, and of course all the fresh produce and other products produced right here on the Central Coast! It all has to move from point A to point B and in a timely manner of course!  This trucking center is one of their eight truck centers in California and we learned about the challenges that trucking has in the State of California.  Challenges like fleets being 50% electric in 2 years and yet no state infrastructure of charging stations even on the drawing board for trucks!!  Interstate trucks will have to hand off loads to California certified trucks at the borders!  We even got to see an electric big wheeler and tour the cab and sleeping compartment of a long haul cab!

This week we are back at the Santa Maria Inn for our meeting with the Dignity Behavioral Group!  Dr. David Ketelaar, Jill Austin, and Ken Dalebout will give a presentation on Mental Wellness. I look forward to hearing and learning about the services available in our community!

Special Presentation

Jay Johnson, with Phantom Fireworks, will talk with our club briefly at our March 26 meeting. (He will take about 10 min before our scheduled presenters). Phantom would be our supplier for a fireworks booth and he would go over the details, process, profit margin, etc. I've submitted our application to the City and hope to hear back soon whether we're approved. After hearing Jay's presentation, we can decide as a Club or a Board whether we want to move forward with formalizing his supply agreement.

Club History

Do you know that in 1975-76 there were several father and son combination members of our club?  What is the exact number?  You can find the answer by going to the club website, where Susan Rees has posted the history books of the first 75 years of our club, or you can go to the bottom of the Rotator.

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss the Ritz-Carlton, Maricopa.  Homer began, "They finished all the renovations at the Ritz-Carlton, Maricopa.  It sure looks impressive from the outside."  Januvius replied, "I got a tour of the inside last week.  It is even more opulent. They said that they spent over two million dollars just furnishing the lobby."  "Wow!" exclaimed Homer, "That is something."  Januvius added, "The men's bathroom off of the lobby is bigger than my house.  I think I could probably park my pickup truck in one of the stalls."  "That's unbelievable," remarked Homer.  Januvius said, "They spent all this money, but they still have problems.  The other day a homeless man camped out in one of the stalls in the men's room.  He refused to leave, so the hotel called the police.  When the police asked him to leave the stall he indignantly declined citing "squatter's rights."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?

2.  Is it fair to all concerned?

3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
