Rotary Club of Santa Maria
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

It seems like this was a very busy week!

WE ARE MEETING AT THE Santa Maria Inn THIS WEEK!

Our off-site meeting at Hancock College was a very good meeting led by Dean Rick Rantz of Hancock College. His topic was the UNITED program, which will start at Hancock in the upcoming year.  The program will allow the college to offer a 4 year degree program in certain fields of study.  The first offering will focus on the field of study for a 4 year teaching degree.  Over 150 new educators are hired yearly in the Santa Maria Bonita school district and all have had to earn their teaching credentials outside of our demographic area!  The program at Hancock will grow to accommodate 200 students working towards their degree in teaching!!

This week was also the "Human Trafficking Forum" at the Santa Maria Country Club on Friday.  It was put on by the evening Rotary club and many of you were in attendance to support this forum.  The message was very local and the speakers were all closely connected with the trafficking industry! It was a very sobering presentation and certainly worthy of our time and efforts to see this stopped in our communities!

Please remember there is a Board meeting right after our regular meeting on Tuesday.

See you at the Inn this week!

James Stoddard

"There is a secret, of course, to Rotary's remarkable success, and I don't mind letting it be known.  Rotary has succeeded because in Rotary the standing of a man depends upon his deeds, not his creeds;  and because its course leads toward the brightest and most alluring human objectives;  the brotherhood of man."

RYLA
(Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)
Each year, thousands of young people take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program worldwide. Young people are chosen for their leadership potential to attend an all-expenses-paid camp to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event’s curriculum.  If you know of a high school underclassman (no seniors allowed) who would want to participate in this program, please give the name to President James, who is our RYLA Coordinator.  The applications are due in January.  The RYLA camp is April 11-14.

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss "Dry January."  Homer asked, "How is your "Dry January" going?"  Januvius answered, "I'm not really doing a "Dry January."  It's more like a "Damp January."  "All right," piped up Homer, "Then what is a "Damp January?"  Januvius responded, "It's not a full blown "Dry January."  You allow yourself to have some days where you can drink.  For example, some people only drink on weekends.  Other people only drink every other day."  Homer said, "That sounds pretty reasonable.  So when do you allow yourself to drink?"  Januvius proudly announced, "I only drink on days that end in "Y."  A clearly disappointed Homer mused, "You know that the Four Way Test applies to "all concerned," including yourself.  "I know that," interrupted Januvius, "But I've been lying to myself for so long that it seems natural to keep lying to myself.  I'm not sure if I could tell myself the truth."  Homer thought for a second, the offered, "Perhaps I should write a book "The Four Way Test For Dummies?"  Immediately Januvius jumped, "Can I have a signed copy?"

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?

2.  Is it fair to all concerned?

3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
