Rotary Club of Santa Maria
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

It seems like it has been so long since we last met!!  We have a great slate of speakers and events going forward, so don't miss a meeting!

This next Tuesday we will have as our guest speaker Sandra Dickerson. She is the President of the Board of the Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra!  I look forward to "hearing" her presentation!!  Thank you Marga for finding us this important speaker!

Nancy Crawford will also present information on our upcoming fundraiser!!  This is a big event and will require "All Hands On Deck!"

On 2/13 our speaker will be Mark Steller, who is a local business owner and a member of the Orcutt Union School Board!  Perhaps he will talk about both of those topics!! On the 13th we will be meeting in the Santa Maria room of the Inn as they are renovating the Kent room that week!!

On 2/20 we will be cleaning up Buena Vista Park and on 2/27 District Governor Marta Golding Brown will present her Rotary vision to our Club.  We will also have a Board meeting with Marta following the meeting!!

RYLA
(Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)
Each year, thousands of young people take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program worldwide. Young people are chosen for their leadership potential to attend an all-expenses-paid camp to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event’s curriculum.  If you know of a high school underclassman (no seniors allowed) who would want to participate in this program, please give the name to President James, who is our RYLA Coordinator.  The applications are due in January.  The RYLA camp is April 11-14.

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss following directions.  Homer asked, "What have you been doing this week?"  Januvius replied, "I've been learning about the importance of following directions."  Homer inquired, "Would you like to tell me about that?"  "Sure," began Januvius, "A couple days ago my neighbor called me in a panic.  She had an important appointment that she couldn't miss, and her babysitter cancelled at the last minute.  She asked if I could watch her three year old son, Jehoshaphat, for a couple of hours.  I jumped at the opportunity and told her it would be no problem.  I took him to the playground and he played on the swings and the sliding board.  He climbed on the monkey bars.  He had a great time and I really enjoyed watching him have a great time.  We came back home and he played with his trucks in the dirt in the back yard.  It was great "male bonding."  By this time it was getting close to when his mother was to come home and I realized that both Jehoshaphat and his clothes were pretty dirty.  I figured I could toss Jehoshaphat in the washing machine and he and his clothes would get washed at the same time.  But for some reason I  read the tag on his shirt.  The tag told me to remove child before washing.  I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't removed the shirt from Jehoshaphat, but I'm guessing it wouldn't have been good.  So I washed the clothes in the washing machine and Jehoshaphat in the bathtub and everything turned out great."  Homer mused, "I guess there are times when us men do need to read the directions."  Januvius quickly asked, "You're not going to tell my wife are you?"  "My lips are sealed," said Homer.

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?

2.  Is it fair to all concerned?

3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
