Rotary Club of Santa Maria
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

I just got done attending the District Training for all the Rotary Clubs in our District.  We have so many talented leaders and trainers!  All of the areas covered will be available to anyone who would like more information on almost any aspect of the functions of a Rotary Club!!  Marga also attended and we tried to coordinate the sessions we took so that we covered most of the material that might be most important to our Club.

Hearing from the People's Self Help Housing group this past week was very rewarding.  In my career in the appliance industry I worked with several builders who were involved with building and heading up Self Help Housing projects.  My company (Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana and Jenn Air) was able to write contracts for appliances at very low margins that kept these homes affordable.  The families involved in these builds put in great amounts of "sweat equity" to make their dreams come true!

This week we will hear from Nate Moss, the Principal of Delta High School, and the special need that this institution fills in our community!

Remember to sign up for the wine and dessert fund raiser coming up on May 5th!!  Nancy Crawford is leading this for us and has a sign up sheet available.  We need everyone involved to make this a success!!

Service Above Self.

James Stoddard

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss local law enforcement.  Homer asked, "What has been going on with you this week?"  Januvius answered, "I had a little run in with the local law enforcement."  Homer inquired, "Did they give you a ticket because you had that manikin in your truck so you could try to fool people into thinking there were two of you in the truck so you could then drive faster than anyone else in the car pool lane?"  "No," replied Januvius, "I got pulled over for driving 5 miles per hour over the speed limit.  The officer came to the window and asked to see my driver's license.  I gave it to him and he informed me, "You're supposed to be wearing glasses."  I said, "I have contacts."  He glared at me, "I don't care who you know.  I'm still giving you a ticket for going 5 miles per hour over the speed limit."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?

2.  Is it fair to all concerned?

3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
