Rotary Club of Santa Maria
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

THIS WEEK WE ARE OFF SITE:  Central Coast Truck Center @ 1400 W. STOWELL RD.  SEE YOU THERE!

It was great hearing from our friends at Peoples Self Help Housing this week,  Good to know they are helping families attain their goals of home ownership with planning and a great amount of "sweat equity"!  I was surprised at how many families were helped in both SLO and Santa Barbara counties.
Housing is so difficult to find on the Central Coast.  They are making a difference in our communities and our local families!

This week we will hear from Gary Ruskauff who manages Central Coast Truck Center for the Freightliner brand.  Moving freight of all kinds is critical in commerce and I am interested in learning more about this business.

Rev. Carl Neilsen will not be able to speak April 2nd due to some health concerns.  Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Hopefully we will be able to have him back after his recovery.

Club History

Do you know who the President of our club was when the new bronze bell was ordered on May 6, 1958?   You can find the answer by going to the club website, where Susan Rees has posted the history books of the first 75 years of our club, or you can go to the bottom of the Rotator.

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss exercise and physical fitness.  Homer asked, "You are limping.  Are you OK?  Did you hurt yourself?"  Januvius responded, "Last weekend I was watching some sports on TV and I got motivated.  I said to myself, "I'll bet if I started training this week I could finish the 1K fun run that is scheduled for May right here in Maricopa."  Homer said, "That sounds painless enough.  What happened?"  Januvius answered, "I got out my running shoes and when I put on my right shoe my plantar fasciitis immediately started acting up.  I could barely walk."  Homer was incredulous, "You mean to tell me that you injured yourself just by putting on your running shoe?"  Januvius explained, "Wait a minute.  It gets worse.  I hobbled out to my truck and went to my doctor's office.  I told him what happened and he did a thorough examination of me.  He said that just thinking about running and putting on one shoe was enough to reactivate my plantar fasciitis.  He also told me that I was lucky I didn't try to put on my other shoe or I might have torn my ACL."  "Yikes!" exclaimed Homer.  "Did he prescribe any treatment for this condition?"  "As a matter of fact he did," said Januvius.  "He said that I have to spend two weeks on the couch not doing any physical exercise or labor.  I cannot watch any sports on TV.  I can only watch Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars movies.  I must eat at least one family size bag of Doritos every day, and I should not even think about my old running shoes.   He actually said it would be best if I gave them to the Salvation Army."  Homer asked, "Does this explanation you gave me pass the Four Way Test?"  Januvius responded, "My wife thinks so."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?

2.  Is it fair to all concerned?

3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
